TCU Women Beat Grambling

FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU women’s basketball team closed a four-game homestand with an 83-47 win over Grambling on Tuesday night at Schollmaier Arena.  The Frogs are now 4-0 for the first time since 2008 with a game at No. 1 Notre Dame coming up on Saturday.

Sophomore Amy Okonkwo led TCU with 18 points off the bench on Tuesday night thanks to a perfect 8-of-8 night from the field.  The eight makes without a miss are the most in TCU history. 

Okonkwo added seven rebounds while sophomore Adeola Akomolafe grabbed a career-high 12 boards to help TCU to a 47-30 advantage over Grambling (1-3) on the glass.

TCU got three 3-pointers from junior AJ Alix in the first quarter, including a buzzer-beater from nearly halfcourt, to take a 22-10 lead after the first 10 minutes.  The Frogs hit 7-of-13 shots in the first quarter and only upped the percentage with an 8-of-14 effort in the second.

The Frogs also held Grambling to just eight points in the second quarter and pulled out to a 41-18 halftime advantage thanks to the 54 percent (15-of-28) shooting.

Grambling cut into the lead in the third quarter with a 19-18 advantage, but TCU poured on 24 points in the fourth, led by nine from Okonkwo, to grow the final margin.

Alix, senior Jada Butts and freshman Ella Hellessey all scored 10 points to join Okonkwo in double figures.  Hellessey also added eight boards and team-highs of four assists and two blocks.

The Frogs recorded 22 assists and have now gone over 20 in all four games this season.
