FORT WORTH, Texas – Natalie Ventress reached 1,000 career points while head coach Jeff Mittie earned his 300th win at TCU as the Horned Frogs cruised to a 64-44 victory over Kansas State on Wednesday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum to improve to 15-11 overall and 6-8 in Big 12 play.
Ventress was one of three Horned Frogs to score in double figures with 15 points off a 6-of-11 effort from the field and 3-of-6 performance from 3-point range. The Fort Worth native became the school’s 13th member of the 1,000-point club with a 3-pointer at the 14:09 mark of the first half.
Sophomore guard Zahna Medley scored a game-high 16 points, going 6-of-13 from the field, including two long-range buckets, while junior forward Chelsea Prince added 11 points to go with five first-half steals.
Senior center Latricia Lovings grabbed 10 rebounds to go with five points while extending her school-record blocks streak to 65-straight games with five rejections.
TCU got off to a slow start against the Wildcats, trailing 10-2 at the 14:53 mark before blowing the contest open by ending the first half on a 27-3 run for a 29-13 advantage at the break.
Ventress’ historic 3-pointer ignited the run, and Prince gave TCU its first lead
of the contest (13-12) at the 6:52 mark with a steal and layup.
Ventress and Prince followed with buckets from beyond the arc and Medley posted back-to-back jumpers within 10 seconds to put the Frogs ahead 24-13 with 4:22 remaining until the break.
Ventress closed out the half with two jumpers as the Frogs limited K-State to just three points over the final 14:53 and no field goals in the last 10:59.
The star of the first half wasted little time in picking up where she left off, as Ventress buried another trey in the opening minute of the second half to put the Frogs up 32-13 and extend their run to 30-3 over a 15-minute period.
Junior guard Donielle Breaux, who posted seven points and a team-best five steals, gave TCU its first 20-point advantage with a 3-pointer at the 14:27 mark, and Medley got in on the 3-point party with back-to-back treys with 8:48 remaining as the Frogs pushed out to a 49-27 lead.
TCU allowed the fewest points all season (44) while holding K-State to a 31-percent effort (17-of-55) from the field and forcing 22 turnovers.
The Frogs connected on 12-of-21 (57 percent) shots in the second half to shoot 49 percent (23-of-47) for the contest, while draining seven of 16 3-piont attempts (44 percent).
TCU will play host to No. 5 Baylor at 11 a.m., on Saturday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in a contest televised on FOX Sports Southwest.
