TCU Women Top Texas Tech

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The TCU women’s basketball team used a complete team effort to top Texas Tech by a score of 71-60 on Sunday afternoon at the University Recreation Center.

The Horned Frogs improved to 14-8 overall and 6-5 in Big 12 play, while the Red Raiders dropped to 13-10 on the season and 3-8 in league action.

Senior Natalie Ventress led three Frogs in double figures with 11 points to go with seven rebounds in 37 minutes of action.

Junior Veja Hamilton extended her double digit streak to 12 games with 10 points, while senior Donielle Breaux also chipped in 10 points with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Senior Chelsea Prince just missed another double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds while also collecting four assists, three steals and two blocks.

Hamilton and Zahna Medley, TCU ‘s top two scorers on the season, combined for just 10 minutes of action in the first half due to foul trouble, but others were able to fill the void as the Horned Frogs’ bench tallied 27 points, marking the most in Big 12 play this season.

With TCU trailing 16-13 early on, sophomore Klara Bradshaw converted the

layup and the ensuing free-throw for a 3-point play to push the Frogs even with the Red Raiders.

Following a 6-0 Tech run, freshman AJ Alix and Prince connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to knot the score again at 22 points apiece with 6:12 remaining in the half.

Ventress gave TCU its first lead in over 13 minutes with a pair of free-throws and junior Caitlin Diaz drained a 3-point bucket for a 29-24 advantage at the 4:21 mark.

Neither team scored in the opening 3:51 of the second half as TCU held on to its 38-33 halftime advantage before erupting for a 10-0 run to take a 48-33 lead at the 13:21 mark.

With a seven-point lead, Medley penetrated before dishing to Ventress on the baseline for a 3-pointer for TCU’s first double-digit advantage.

Hamilton followed with a steal and layup before Medley got on the board for the first time with a 3-pointer of her own for the 15-point lead.

Texas Tech finally snapped the skid with a layup at the 12:28 mark, getting its first points in nearly eight minutes.

The Red Raiders would try to get into striking distance by using the press but were thwarted by long-range buckets from Ventress and Medley down the stretch to keep a comfortable lead.

Medley would score all eight of her points and post three of her four assists in the second half.

Diaz earned a career-best nine points while also grabbing eight rebounds in just 22 minutes.

The Frogs handed out 19 assists and shot 42 percent (25-of-60) from the field, including a 9-of-18 effort from long range. TCU was also 12-of-14 from the charity stripe.

TCU outrebounded Texas Tech, 44-30, while winning the battle in the paint by a 32-28 margin.

Amber Battle led the Red Raiders with 20 points and eight rebounds.

The Frogs return to action at 7 p.m., on Wednesday when they take on Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan.
