TCU Women’s Tennis Blanks Colorado State

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The TCU’s women’s tennis team worked quickly in its match Friday afternoon against Colorado State, picking up a 7-0 victory.
 
It was the third 7-0 sweep of the season for the Horned Frogs and second in Mountain West Conference action. TCU improved to 8-10 overall and 3-3 in the MWC. The Rams fell to 8-10 and 0-5.
 
“We played really well in the doubles, especially at No. 3,” TCU coach Dave Borelli said.  “It’s harder up here with the altitude, but we got acclimated in our second sets in singles. It was a good match and we’ve got a good match with Wyoming tomorrow. It was good to see Federica Denti back in the lineup.”
 
The Frogs rolled through the doubles matches, with Gaby Mastromarino and Idunn Hertzberg striking first. They grabbed an 8-2 triumph at the expense of CSU’s Lauren Pick and Kaitlin Woolridge.
 
Denti and Olivia Smith clinched the doubles point in their first match as partners with an 8-5 win at No. 2 over Melissa Holzinger and Kaley Schultz. Maria Babanova and Katariina Tuohimaa added an 8-5 downing of Tori Arneson and Caitlin Fluegge at No. 1 doubles.
 
TCU got right to work in singles action as Denti returned to the lineup from injury and better Holzinger, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Mastromarino made it 3-0 for TCU with her 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Arneson at No. 2 singles.
 
Tuohimaa clinched the match for the Frogs soon after with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Fluegge. The senior from Helsinki, Finland, is 5-1 from the No. 1 spot this spring against league foes.
 
At No. 3 singles, Smith made it 5-0 for TCU with her 6-3, 3-0, ret., win over Schultz. The Bath, England, native is 5-1 against MWC competition and has strung together five straight wins.
 
Hertzberg and Shalini Sahoo polished off the Frog sweep with their 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1 wins, respectively at Nos. 5 and 6.
 
TCU returns to action tomorrow morning against Wyoming. First serve is set for 11 a.m., CT
