IRVING, Texas — TCU linebacker Kenny Cain has received Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week recognition for his performance in Saturday’s 27-7 victory over Virginia.

Cain is the second straight TCU linebacker to garner the honor. Joel Hasley was cited last week for his play in a Sept. 8 win at Kansas.

One of just three seniors in the starting lineup for TCU, and the lone senior starter on defense, Cain took part in three takeaways with two interceptions and a fumble recovery. The Metairie, La., native keyed a TCU defense that didn’t allow its first touchdown of the season until 4:22 was left in the game. Virginia was also held to a 3-of-16 mark on third-down conversions.

Cain added four tackles, including one for loss, and a quarterback hurry. His takeaways led to 10 TCU points. He totaled 56 yards on his two interception returns.

Cain became the first TCU linebacker with two interceptions in a game in Gary Patterson’s 12 seasons as head coach and the first since Chad Bayer on Nov. 20, 1999 versus UTEP. Cain is also only the eighth player with two picks in a game in the Patterson head coaching era. The last was cornerback Nick Sanders versus BYU in 2008.
