TCU’s Gray Named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

IRVING, Texas — TCU true freshman Deante’ Gray has been named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week after his record-setting performance in the 15th-ranked Horned Frogs’ season-opening 56-0 victory over Grambling State.

Gray becomes the first TCU football student-athlete to receive a weekly Big 12 honor.

Gray set a TCU single-game record with 160 punt return yards on just five attempts. The previous mark of 146 yards on seven returns was by All-American Lindy Berry versus Miami in 1947.

A Houston native, Gray returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown on his first collegiate touch. It came just 1:59 into the game and after a three-and-out on Grambling State’s opening series. Gray had the first punt return for a touchdown by a Horned Frog since Jeremy Kerley went 69 yards against Colorado State on Oct. 17, 2009.

Gray later added a 61-yard punt return.

TCU makes its Big 12 debut Saturday with an 11 a.m. contest at Kansas.
