UNT Golfer Vies For National Title

PULLMAN, Wash – Rodolfo Cazaubon’s goal of reaching the NCAA Championship is now a reality. The North Texas senior scorched the Palouse Ridge Golf Course in the final round with a 4-under par and he will play for the national championship in Atlanta in 10 days. Cazaubon advanced by virtue of being the lowest individual player on a team not advancing to the finals.
He is the first individual player from North Texas to play for the national title in golf in the modern era. North Texas as a team finished in 12th place after shooting a final round of even-par 288 to end at 1-over par for the regional.
Cazaubon had the second lowest score of the day at 4-under par 68. He finished in a tie for sixth place at 7-under par 209. His final round started on hole 10 and he took advantage of the back nine holes. He had four birdies on the back nine and was 4-under. Cazaubon pushed it to 5-under before dropping back to 4-under with his only bogey on the day, but it wasn’t enough to stop him from qualifying for the national title.
Senior Carlos Ortiz closed out his sensational career at North Texas with a final round of 2-over par 74. He finished in a tie for 49th place. Ortiz ends his run with the Mean Green as one of the most decorated players in school history. He, along
with Cazaubon, was a four-time all-conference player in all four of his years with North Texas. The pair is just the second and third players ever to be four-time all-conference.
Senior Marco Scarola shot a third round of 3-over par 75 and finished in a tie for 55th place. Scarola shot the best round of his career in the opening round with a 6-under 66. Senior Curtis Donahoe had a final round of 79 and finished in a tie for 64th place. Donahoe leaves NT as a four-year letterman, who was a key part of the Mean Green’s run to back-to-back conference titles and three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore Jason Roets had his best day of the regional with a 1-under par 71. He posted five birdies on the day.
No. 1 Cal, No. 11 TCU, No. 13 USC, No. 24 St. Mary’s and Ball State are the five teams advancing from the Pullman Regional to the NCAA Finals along with Cazaubon.
Cazaubon’s quest for the national title begins May 28 at The Capital City Club, Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Georgia.
