DENTON, Texas – Freshman Chris Jones led the Mean Green basketball team to a commanding 82-40 victory over the Grambling State Tigers on Tuesday night at the Super Pit.

Jones, who racked up 20 points to go along with his four steals, five assists and four rebounds, led the North Texas (6-5) offense around the Tiger (0-8) defense with poise and precision, allowing the Mean Green to shoot 49 percent from the field. Five North Texas players scored in double digits.

After a first half performance that saw North Texas up 12 points at the half, the Mean Green came out of the break on fire, amassing an 11-4 run in the first 1:41 behind nine points from Jones.

NT would keep the momentum going for the rest of the game, outscoring Grambling State 50-20 in the final frame for the final 42-point margin of victory.

The game was the first time since Nov. 10, 2007, that the Mean Green doubled-up an opponent and the third time on the season that it scored 80 points or more, extending the season record to 3-0 and the team’s record under Johnny Jones to 91-18 when accomplishing that feat.

The 40 points scored by the Tigers marks the best defensive outing for North Texas on the season.

Freshman Tony Mitchell, who made his first collegiate start, led the Mean Green in rebounding, pulling in eight boards to go along with his 10 points and a career-high two blocks.

Brandon Walton (11), Jordan Williams (15) and Roger Franklin (14) joined Mitchell and Jones in double-figure scoring, marking a season-high of players in scoring 10 or more.

North Texas will return to action on Thursday night with the Louisiana State Tigers come to town. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the Super Pit.
