BOCA RATON, Fla.- North Texas soccer moved to just a half-game behind conference leader Denver, who lost Sunday, with a 2-0 win over Florida Atlantic Sunday. Michelle Young and Ellen Scarfone scored in the first half for the Mean Green.

North Texas (11-4-1, 6-1-0 Sun Belt), guaranteed their 17th straight winning season, which accounts for every year in program history, with the win over Florida Atlantic (5-9-1, 1-6-1 Sun Belt). Only six other programs have active streaks of more winning seasons.

Michelle Young scored her Sun Belt-leading 12th goal of the season in the 17th minute with an assist from Ellen Scarfone. Young is now alone in 8th place at North Texas in career goals with 29, and is the first North Texas player to score at least 12 goals in a season since 2007. Young, who has seven goals in seven conference games, moves into a tie for fifth in career game-winning goals at North Texas with today’s game-winner.

Scarfone got her name on the scoresheet in the 26th minute, as she bent a corner kick directly into the goal for her fifth goal of the season, to go with her assist earlier in the game. Her goal directly into the net from the corner is North Texas’ second in two seasons, as Carly McDowell bent a corner into the net against La.-Lafayette on Oct. 3, 2010. Scarfone has scored or assisted in six of North Texas’ last seven games, and has four goals and six assists in that span. Scarfone is now tied for eighth on North Texas’ career assists list.

Jackie Kerestine earned her fifth shutout of the season, which ties her for eighth in a single season at North Texas, making three saves on the afternoon. Kerestine is tied for seventh on North Texas’ career shutout list with five. Her goals-against-average dips to 0.90, which would rank tied for third in a single season at North Texas.

North Texas out-shot FAU 13 to 6, and earned 10 corners to the Owls’ one.

North Texas returns to the Mean Green Soccer Complex on Thursday, October 20 to take on UALR at 7 p.m.
