UNT Soccer Defeats UALR

DENTON, Texas- North Texas soccer kept pace with the leaders of the Sun Belt Conference with a 2-0 win over UALR Thursday night at the Mean Green Soccer Complex. Carly McDowell and Ellen Scarfone scored for the Mean Green.

North Texas (12-4-1, 7-1-0 Sun Belt) remains in control of its own destiny in the Sun Belt Championship race with a win over UALR (7-11-0, 3-6-0 Sun Belt). With two games remaining in Sun Belt play, North Texas is mere percentage points behind Denver, and just in front of FIU in the standings.

Carly McDowell scored her fourth goal of the season, her first since Aug. 28, in the 58th minute when Kara Brooks found her cutting across the field for a one-on-one with the keeper. McDowell has four career game-winning goals. Brooks, with her assist tonight, now has three on the season, and one in each of the last two home games.

In the 69th minute, a Michelle Young cross was handled by an outfield player from UALR, resulting in a North Texas penalty kick. Ellen Scarfone put the spot kick home, making her five for five in her career, which is the third-most made in North Texas history. Scarfone has six goals on the season, and has scored or assisted in six of North Texas’ eight Sun Belt games this season.

Jackie Kerestine picked up her second straight shutout, and sixth shutout on the year. Her six shutouts are tied for fifth-most in a single season at North Texas. Her overall goals against average is 0.84, which would rank third in a single season at North Texas, and her goals against average in Sun Belt play is 0.38, tops in the league.

North Texas out-shot UALR 21-6, and earned three corners to UALR’s one. UALR had four cards shown tonight, three yellows, including one to the keeper Michelle Pittman for handling the ball outside the box, and a red card to head coach Freddy Delgado at the very end of the game.

North Texas takes on Arkansas State on Sunday, October 23 in Jonesboro at 1 p.m. The Mean Green host Senior Night and Sun Belt leaders Denver on Friday, October 28 at the Mean Green Soccer Complex, with kick set for 7 p.m.
