UNT Softball Splits Games With Texas State

DENTON, Texas (4/11/12) – Maddelyn Fraley knocked in five RBI to lead the North Texas softball team to a 7-1 win against Texas State on Wednesday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. Texas State won the first game of the doubleheader, 6-0.

The Mean Green improves to 18-19-1 overall, while Texas State now stands at 25-15.

North Texas was held scoreless in the first game but responded in game two with seven runs on 11 hits.

Fraley went 3-for-4 in the win with five RBI. She posted two doubles and a three-run homer. The five-RBI ties a single-game school record.

Ashley Kirk picked up her sixth win of the season. She pitched seven innings, giving up one run off seven hits. The sophomore gave up a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning. She struck out eight batters.

North Texas took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off an RBI double. Lisa Johnson scored from first after reaching base with a single.

Fraley knocked in her second run of the game in the third inning with her second double. Brooke Foster scored from second after reaching base with a single. Johnson scored the team’s third run of the game off a sacrifice fly by Caitlin Grimes.

The Mean Green scored four runs in the fifth inning, including a three-run homer by Fraley. It was her team-leading 10th home run of the season. The 10 home runs move her into sole possession of fifth place on the single-season list. With her five RBI, she moved up to fourth place in the Mean Green single-season record book.

Chandler Hall pitched a five-hit shutout for Texas State in the opening game. Hall struck out 12 Mean Green batters in the 6-0 Bobcats win.

Foster and Fraley combined for four of the five Mean Green hits in the loss.

The Mean Green was hurt by seven errors in the game. Only two of the six runs in the game were earned. Brittany Simmons (9-8) took the loss, giving up five runs off five hits in three innings of work. Lauren Poole pitched four innings of relief, allowing just one run off five hits.

Johnson went 3-for-3 in the win with two singles, a double and a walk. Johnson tied her own school record with her one walk today, increasing her season total to 29.
