UNT Softball Sweeps Doubleheader

DENTON, Texas – The North Texas softball team swept WKU in doubleheader action behind two walk-off hits on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green won the first game, 9-8, and took the nightcap by a score of 4-3.

The Mean Green improves to 15-17 overall and 6-5 in Sun Belt play, while the Lady Toppers fall to 21-14 and 4-4 in the conference. North Texas looks for the sweep of the conference series with the third game on Sunday at 12 p.m.

In the first game, Jordan Terry knocked in the game-winning run with a pinch-hit double that scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. After starting off with a 3-0 lead, North Texas entered the seventh inning trailing, 8-4.

In the nightcap, Caitlin Grimes hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give North Texas the win. Grimes led off the sixth inning with a solo home run that cut the lead to 3-2, and her two-run long ball in the seventh handed the win to the Mean Green.

North Texas gave up early leads in both games. The Mean Green took a 3-0 in the fourth inning of the first game off an error, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Jackie Miller. WKU quickly tied the game in the top of the fifth off an error and a two-RBI single by Ciara Garcia.

Ashley McCarroll put North Texas ahead for a second time with a solo home run in the sixth inning. It was her sixth

home run of the season. The Lady Toppers responded again with five runs in the top of the seventh off four hits and a sacrifice fly.

The Mean Green needed five runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game and the squad did just that. Lesley Hirsch led off with a walk, and Lisa Johnson advanced her to second with a single to left field. Maddelyn Fraley knocked home the first run with a double down the right field line. Grimes walked to load the bases, and Dani Hoff brought home a second run with another walk. Fraley scored on a wild pitch to cut lead to one, 8-7.

Terry pinch hit for Darian Blake and scored two runs with a double to right center field. Hoff scored the game-tying run, and Madison Thompson scored the game-winning run. It was Thompson’s first run of her career after pinch-running for Grimes.

Lauren Poole (3-3) took the win for the Mean Green in game one. She relieved Brittany Simmons in the seventh inning and allowed just one hit. Simmons pitched 6.1 innings and allowed seven runs off seven hits.

Ashley Kirk (3-8) took the win in the nightcap. She pitched seven innings and allowed two earned runs off three hits. She walked four batters and struck out five.

Brooke Foster gave North Texas a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game with her sixth home run of the season. WKU scored a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to go ahead by two, 3-1.

Grimes hit a towering solo home run on the first pitch she saw in the sixth inning to cut the lead to one and then won the game with a two-run walk-off shot in the seventh. She leads the team with nine home runs, which is tied for the fifth-most in school history. The senior went 3-for-3 in the night cap with three RBI.
