UNT Tennis Goes 8-2 On Day Two of North Texas Classic

DENTON, Texas – North Texas tennis completed day two of the Game On North Texas Classic with an 8-2 overall record from Waranch Tennis Complex.

Junior Valentina Starkova and freshman Franziska Sprinkmeyer had another good outing on Saturday as the duo dominated in doubles over Ksenia Berestetska and Natasha Kuvakina of Akron with a score of 8-2.

“Overall we had another good day today,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “I liked the way that the girls continued to play today against a very good Akron team, especially having to deal with the tough wind conditions. I look forward to finishing off the weekend and the fall season on a strong note against Northwestern State tomorrow.”

Singles saw the Mean Green take the first five matches off the court in convincing fashion. Starkova defeated Akron’s Pantusart, 6-3, 6-1, while Sprinkmeyer (6-0, 6-2), Nadia Lee (6-3, 6-1), Ilona Serchenko (6-2, 6-2) and Paula Dinuta (6-3, 6-2) matched her straight set victories.

Serchenko and Lee also nabbed a doubles victory earlier in the day as they shot down the Zips twin duo of Angelika and Anglina Jogasuria, 8-4.

Freshman Kseniya Bardabush and junior Barbora Vykydalova had a tough start to the day as they fell in flight 1 doubles in dramatic 9-7 fashion.

Vykydalova would also play a thrilling three-set match in singles. After taking the first set, Akron’s Natasha Kuvakina would battle back to force a third set. In the end, Vykydalova was too much, winning the 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The final day of the Game On North Texas Classic will begin at 8:30 a.m. with UTEP and Akron facing off. The Mean Green will begin doubles against Northwestern State at 10 a.m.

As always, admission to the Waranch Tennis Complex for North Texas tennis matches is free of charge.
