UNT Volleyball Claims Islander Classic Title

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Melanie Boykins earned tournament MVP honors as the North Texas volleyball team brought home the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic title with a 3-2 (12-25, 25-15, 25-23, 20-15, 15-8) win over host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The Mean Green (7-4) won its first tournament of the year thanks to 18 kills and 21 digs from Eboni Godfrey, who was also named to the all-tournament team along with libero Sarah Willey and Boykins.

NT hit .215 on the Islanders (5-5), who committed 34 total errors on Saturday. Willey also landed 21 digs in the match and 4.92 digs per set for the weekend.

North Texas started with a shaky first set, but rebounded to hit .615 and force a sideout on 93 percent of TAMCC’s serves in the second frame. Kayla Saey was the catalyst of the win with 50 assists and an average of 11.33 per set this weekend.

NT returns to action at home next weekend in the Mean Green Volleyball Classic, which features Texas State (Friday at 7 p.m.), Jackson State (Saturday at 11 a.m.) and Kennesaw State (Saturday at 7 p.m.).
