UNT Women Defeat Troy

DENTON, Texas- The North Texas women’s basketball team started its New Year’s Eve celebration early, defeating Troy 57-36, on Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit.

The Trojans (1-12, 0-2 SBC) couldn’t hold their ground against the Mean Green (9-6, 2,0 SBC). North Texas extends its all-time record against Troy to 8-3.

In her first season, Coach Karen Aston has led her team for the third 2-0 Sun Belt Conference start in program history.

North Texas’ stingy defense held Troy to 10-for-51 (19.6 percent) shooting from the field for the game. The Trojans made more free throws (11) than field goals (10). The Trojan’s 36 points ties for the fourth-fewest points allowed in program history.

Ash’Lynne Evans tied her career-high 18 points, set in the Mean Green’s previous game against UALR. Evans ended the afternoon shooting perfectly from the free throw line (8-8) and grabbed eight rebounds.

Brittney Hudson knocked down 11 points; the 10 th time she’s scored double-digit points this season.

Tamara Torru dropped 10 points, snatched eight rebounds, and had an assist, block and steal.

The Mean Green’s constant attack on the glass helped determine the outcome of the game, outrebounding Troy 53-31. North Texas ended with night with 21 offensive rebounds that resulted in 19 second-chance points.

North Texas went into halftime with its second-largest lead of the season over Troy 32-13. The Trojan’s 13 first half points are the fewest allowed by the Mean Green defense this season. North Texas allowed only three players to score from the field and held the Trojans to 4-for-21 (19 percent) shooting.

Evans shined in the first half, producing 12 points on four-of-five shots from the field along with four rebounds.

The Mean Green opened the game with a 14-0 run, the largest total point run of the season. The Trojans were held without a field goal until 12:58 left in the first, trailing North Texas, 21-4.

The Mean Green begins the New Year at South Alabama on January 4 th at 7:05 p.m. in Mobile, Ala.
