UNT Women Down Troy

DENTON, Texas (1/2/13) Sara Stanley and Alexis Hyder both recorded double-doubles to lead the North Texas women’s basketball team to an 87-71 win against Troy on Wednesday night at the Super Pit.

The Mean Green snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory and earned its second conference win of the season. North Texas improves to 3-10 overall and 2-2 in the Sun Belt, while the Trojans fall to 3-10 and 0-4 in the conference.

North Texas had one of its best performances of the season with the win tonight. The Mean Green registered season highs in points (87) and made free throws (33). The 33 free throws ties for the fifth most in a single-game at North Texas.

Stanley recorded her first double-double of the season and the third of her career. She scored a career high 23 points and tied a career high with 11 rebounds. She led four players in double figures. Hyder tied a personal best with 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Mean Green raced out to an 18-1 start and did not stop to catch its breath the entire game. Behind 42 percent shooting from the field and 17 made free throws, North Texas sped out to a 50-30 halftime lead.

North Texas did not let up in the second half, opening on a 19-11 run to take

its largest lead of the game, 69-41, at 13:11. Troy outscored the Mean Green, 41-37, in the second half, but the Trojans could not overcome their slow start.

North Texas had just one more field goal in the game than Troy, but the key was the Mean Green’s free-throw shooting. The Mean Green made 33-of-38 free throws in the game. Loryn Goodwin was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. She finished with 15 points. Laura McCoy was the fourth player in double-figures with 12 points.

North Texas made the first five field goals of the game to start off with an 18-1 advantage in the opening six minutes. Goodwin scored seven of those points. A Hyder 3-pointer extended the Mean Green lead to 25-8 at 12:10.

The trio of Hyder, Goodwin and Stanley combined for 37 of NT’s opening 50 points. All three scored in double-figures in the first half. Stanley scored 11 points in the first half on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.

Troy used two 3-pointers by Ashley Beverly-Kelly midway through the first half to get into the game. The 3-pointers started a 14-10 run that cut the Mean Green lead to 10 points, 35-25 at 4:50.

McCoy started a 9-0 run for the Mean Green with her first 3-pointer of the game. The run put North Texas ahead by 19 points, 44-25, with 3:07 on the clock. The Mean Green ended the first half on a 13-5 run to enter half ahead, 50-30.

The 50 points is the most scored in a first half by the Mean Green this season and the most since 2010.

North Texas dominated on the boards, 49-33. North Texas is back in action looking for its first two-game winning streak of the season on Saturday night when they host ULM at 5 p.m. at the Super Pit.
