BOCA RATON, Fla. – A late run couldn’t help the North Texas women’s basketball team overcome a slow start and cold shooting in a 71-63 loss at Florida Atlantic on Saturday afternoon.

The Mean Green (13-12, 6-6 Sun Belt West) shot 34.2 percent from the floor and found itself in an early hole in the wire-to-wire loss to the Owls (14-9, 9-3 Sun Belt East). NT used six second-half 3-pointers to spur a late run, including Kasondra Foreman’s offering with 19.5 seconds on the clock, but FAU had an answer each time.

Sara Stanley, coming off a career-high 19 point game at FIU, topped that effort and scored her second career double-double with 21 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. The junior hit a pair of free throws to cut the FAU lead to six with 1:42 remaining, but that was as close as NT would come.

Tamara Torru and Desiree Nelson also reached double figures for the Mean Green with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

NT got off to a slow start, but defense kept the squad in the game early. NT missed its first seven shots before Stanley buried a pair of jumpers. A couple of steals from Stanley and Nelson helped Jasmine Godbolt hit a layup on the other end that cut the FAU lead down to a bucket, 11-9, with 12:30 remaining in the half.

The 3-ball was the key to the Owl’s success for much of the day. FAU hit three of their first five from beyond the arc in the game’s first 10 minutes, and led by as much as 15 points at 25-10 with six minutes remaining. Their largest lead was 17 points late in the half.

On the day, the Owls connected on 50 percent (5-of-10) of their shots from 3-point, and stretched the Mean Green defense with 28 points in the paint. FAU went to the line 30 times, while NT shot nine free throws.

FAU went into the break with a 33-22 lead, but North Texas came out of the locker room on fire. Torru and Nelson both splashed home a 3-pointer to cut the FAU lead to 34-28 with 17 minutes remaining. However, FAU responded with an 8-0 run to put the game beyond the Mean Green’s reach.

Chenise Miller led the FAU attack with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

North Texas returns home Wednesday to face ULM at 7 p.m. As always, the action can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network on 88.1 KNTU-FM.
