UNT’s Kirk Strikes Out Ten In Softball Victory

DENTON, Texas (10/27/11) – Sophomore Ashley Kirk pitched five scoreless innings to lead the North Texas softball team to a 4-2 win against North Central Texas College on Wednesday night at Lovelace Stadium.

The Mean Green won its fifth game of the fall season. Kirk led off the game by striking out five of the first six batters. She went out to record 10 strikeouts in five innings of work. She gave up just five hits and held NCTC scoreless.

Caitlin Grimes knocked in the first run of the game with a double in the first inning. The senior went 1-for-2 in the game with two walks. Senior outfielder Jessica Shields brought home the second run with an RBI single in the first to give North Texas an early 2-0 lead.

Shields went 3-for-3 in the game with two RBI and a walk. She knocked in the team’s fourth run in the eighth inning. Megan Rupp also posted a multi-hit performance with two singles.

Brittany Simmons pitched four innings of relief for the Mean Green. She gave up a two-run homer in the seventh that cut the NT lead to 3-2. The junior held NCTC scoreless the remainder of the game.

North Texas has three remaining fall games on its schedule, all at home. The Mean Green hosts Navarro College on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m.
