UNT’s Young Wins Soccer Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS, La.- Junior forward Michelle Young has been named the Sun Belt Conference Soccer Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. This is the second player of the week honor of Young’s career, and the second for the soccer team this season.

Young scored three times this weekend, scoring both goals of the Mean Green’s 2-1 win over WKU and put the Middle Tennessee game out of reach with a 65th minute goal which made it 2-0. Young’s brace against Western Kentucky marked the fourth time she has had a multi-goal Sun Belt game in her career, and was her ninth career game winner, which moved her into a tie for seventh at North Texas.

Young is one goal away from 9th place on North Texas’ career goals list. Through two games of Sun Belt play, Young is tied with two others for the league lead with three goals scored and is second in points with six.

Nikki Crocco is the other North Texas soccer player to win Player of the Week honors this year, earning the award for her two goals against SMU on Sept. 2, a 2-1 North Texas win.

On the season, Young leads the SBC with eight goals scored and has 19 points in ten games. North Texas as a team leads the SBC with 31 goals scored and ranks 13th in the nation.

North Texas will travel to ULM on Friday before taking on Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday. The Mean Green return to the Mean Green Soccer Complex on Friday, October 7, as it hosts Troy at 7 p.m.
