ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington’s bats came alive too late in Friday night’s 6-3 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christie at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Mavericks dropped to 2-6 on the season, including 0-4 at home. The four-game series with the Islanders (4-7) continues Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

“We did nothing to build on our momentum from Tuesday,” UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said, referring to the win at TCU. “The bottom line is we have to step up and have better at-bats and we have to pitch better in crucial situations.”

TAMU-CC starter Matt Danton (2-1) had the Mavericks guessing through seven innings before running into some trouble in the eight. Danton went 7.2 innings and was charged with all three UTA runs.

UTA starter Zach Thompson (0-2) went 6.0 innings in his third start, giving up five runs on six hits and three walks.

The Mavericks were trailing 6-0 when they finally got on the board in the

eighth inning. Matt Shortall’s two-out double into the right-field corner drove home Brady Cox from second base.

John Michael Twichell followed with a two-run double down the first-base line. Kevin Landgrebe, the Islanders’ second reliever in the inning, retired Ryan Bottger to end the threat.

The Mavericks loaded the bases in the ninth with one out before two strikeouts ended the game.

UTA left eight men on base and finished with seven hits. The Islanders had nine hits, with Jordan Lee going 3-5 with two RBI.
