SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State made a three-run, two-out rally in the eighth to complete a sweep of UT Arlington on Sunday at Bobcat Ballpark to begin Sun Belt Conference play.

The Mavericks (5-14, 0-3 SBC) matched a season-high losing streak of four games in the 3-1 loss, while the Bobcats improved to 13-6 overall and 3-0 in the Sun Belt Conference. The sweep was the first time UTA has lost all three to open a conference schedule since 2009.

“It was a very disappointing loss,” UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. “Zach Thompson threw his best game of the year and definitely deserved the win.”

Two towering fly balls with two outs gave UTA trouble in the eighth with the wind gusting in from center at over 25 mph. The first was misplayed by Derek Miller, and following an intentional walk, the second gave Justin Copeland trouble in right to score two runs.

Thompson hit career highs in both innings pitched (7.2) and strikeouts (9) despite falling to 1-3 for the season. Thompson was responsible for three earned runs, gave up nine hits and walked one.

Greg McCall continued his offensive surge with two hits for the second consecutive game. The UTA catcher provided the Mavericks with their lone run in the contest to follow a double to left by scoring on a wild pitch.

UTA returns home to begin a five-game homestand that begins on Tuesday against Sam Houston State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
