UTA Baseball Falls To Texas A&M

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington rallied late, but came up short in a 5-4 against No. 18 Texas A&M on a chilly Tuesday night at Globe Life Park.

The Mavericks dropped to 3-8 on the season and 8-26 all-time against the Aggies. Texas A&M improved to 8-4.

UTA had the tying run at second and winning run come to the plate in the bottom of the ninth after scoring once. The first two batters reached – Darien McLemore singled and Peter Cuomo reached on the error – and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch.

Pinch hitter Jackson Morris doubled with one out to score McLemore. Matt Shortall’s sacrifice fly scored Cuomo, cutting the A&M lead to one. Greg McCall struck out to end the game.

Aggies starter Tyler Stubblefield (2-1) struck out nine in 5.2 innings. The Mavericks did get six runners on against Stubblefield – five hits and a walk – but failed to score.

UTA starter Brad Vachon (1-3) pitched into the seventh inning, allowing four runs on five hits. The Aggies had scored just twice through six innings before Vachon allowed two runners on to start the seventh.

Both would come around to score against reliever Chase Weaver. The Aggies had

just seven hits, but made them count.

Shortall went 3-4 for UTA, including a triple in the first. McCall hit his third home run of the season in the eighth, a two-run shot to score Shortall.

The Mavs did leave nine runners on, including the bases loaded in the seventh.

The Mavericks are back in action Friday against Utah at Clay Gould Ballpark with the start of the UTA Hilton Invitational. UT Arlington does return to the home of the Texas Rangers on March 11 against Oklahoma.
