ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington struggled at the plate on Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark connecting in five at-bats in the 6-1 loss against South Alabama.

The Mavericks (7-7, 2-2 Sun Belt) were stifled by Jaguar pitcher Kevin Hill (1-0) who went seven innings on the mound giving up five hits and one earned run while fanning four. The Jaguars (12-6, 3-1 Sun Belt) gained control of the matchup early connecting on the first two at-bats of the game before bringing in three runs in the opening inning.

“We weren’t very good tonight, but give Kevin Hill credit,” UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas. “He did a good job by using his slider and change up when he needed to and we just didn’t make any adjustments all night long.”

Brady Cox was the lone Maverick with a multi-hit game as the Fort Worth native went 2-of-4 at the plate.

South Alabama added a pair of runs to its lead in the third and sixth inning to take a five-run lead into the bottom of the sixth.

UTA was poised to make a comeback in the bottom of the sixth when a pair of walks coupled with a Jackson Morris single to left field loaded the bases with one out on the board. Will Olson then sent a fly ball to CF that made way for Eric Tate to cross the plate on the sacrifice fly. Brady Cox then loaded the bases again with his single through the right side. However, the comeback efforts in the sixth came up short as Travis Sibley flied out to right field to end the inning.

“We had one shot there in the sixth and just got one in,” Thomas added. “We’ve got to do a better job at the plate. I thought we made it a little too easy on him and hopefully it’s just a one game thing.”

South Alabama put one more run up on the Mavericks in the ninth inning to give the Jaguars their final margin of victory at five runs.

UTA scored its one run off of five hits with one error while USA registered six runs from ten hits with an error free game.

The Mavericks and Jaguars will square off in game two of the three-game series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
