LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – UT Arlington finished off another Sun Belt Conference road series victory by overwhelming UALR 8-1 Sunday afternoon at Hogan Field.

The Mavericks claimed the series 2-1, improving to 24-25 and 13-11 in conference. UTA has won its last four SBC road sets, and is 12-6 in league play since a 1-5 start. The Trojans dropped to 21-26 and 7-17.

The long ball was put to good use in the series finale, as the Mavericks clobbered three home runs. Levi Scott, John Michael Twichell and Darien McLemore each went deep in a 10-hit barrage.

UTA starter Zach Thompson, the beneficiary of the offensive outburst, was about to shut down UALR. The junior right-hander nearly notched his first career shutout and second career complete game.

Thompson (4-4) was lifted with one out in ninth after a bases-loaded walk. Chad Nack, the winning pitcher in relief Friday night, nailed down the last two outs to end it.

The Mavericks staked Thompson to a 4-0 lead in the fourth, with Levi Scott supplying three of those runs on one swing. Ryan Bottger got things going with a double down the right-field line that UALR argued was foul.

John Michael Twichell followed two batters later with a single to right to get UTA on the board. Scott followed with a mammoth blow to left-center with two runners on. Scott’s second home run of the season was also his second of the series.

The Mavericks added three runs in the sixth on a pair of bombs to right. Twichell’s solo shot opened the inning, and McLemore followed with a two-run blast for a 7-0 lead.

UT Arlington is off during finals week until Friday’s Sun Belt series opener against WKU at Clay Gould Ballpark.
