ARLINGTON, Texas – A first-inning home run from Abilene Christian helped top UT Arlington, 2-1, on Sunday to conclude play in the UTA Hilton Invitational at Clay Gould Ballpark.

With two outs in the first, Seth Spivey followed up a two-out single by Jordan Forrest with a homer over the left-field wall that was the difference on the day.

UTA threated in the ninth with two runners in scoring position, but the Mavs were unable to push a runner across the plate.

The Mavericks fell to 4-10 overall and ended the UTA Hilton Invitational 1-2. Abilene Christian earned its first win of the weekend to improve to 7-6.

“They got two runs in the first and that is all it took,” UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. “We had 20 outs that were either fly balls or strikeouts. That isn’t going to work, especially in this ballpark. I think the effort is there but we just aren’t very good right now and need to figure out how to get better.”

UTA plays its fourth game in as many days on Monday afternoon when it takes on Utah at 1 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Mavs fell to Utah 5-3 on Friday afternoon.

ACU starting pitcher Garrett Demeyere (3-2) went toe-to-toe with UTA’s Brad Vachon in a pitcher’s duel. The starters combined to give up just one run following the two-run homer in the first.

Vachon earned his first complete game of the season, despite picking up the loss and falling to 1-4. Vachon allowed two earned runs, eight hits and struck out six. Demeyer struck out five in eight innings.

Greg McCall provided UTA’s lone offense in the fourth with a first-pitch double to left field that scored John Michael Twichell.
