Forward Kevin Hervey scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, helping Texas-Arlington roll to a 72-61 win over swooning Texas on Tuesday at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
Texas-Arlington (5-3) expanded a three-point lead at the half to as much as 16 points with 6:45 to play and held a double-digit advantage through to the end. It was the first win for the Mavericks in their 12-game series with Texas that dates back to 1989.
Guard Drew Charles added 12 points for the Mavericks, while guard Jalen Jones and forward Jorge Bilbao scored 10 points each for Texas-Arlington.
Texas (3-3) lost its third straight, a streak that saw the Longhorns nosedive out of the Top 25. Swingman Tevin Mack scored a team-high 19 points, 15 of which came in the final 10 minutes of the game. Kerwin Roach Jr. added 16 points for the Longhorns, while freshman center Jarrett Allen added 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Texas went the final 4:36 of the first half without a field goal, allowing Texas-Arlington to forge a 10-0 run and assume a 30-27 lead at halftime. Hervey’s 3-pointer with 15 seconds to play capped the Mavericks’ surge to the lead; he had 12 points in the half to pace the visitors.
Texas-Arlington had the lead at the break despite scoring just six points in the first 10 minutes of the game and missing its first 11 3-point attempts. Even with the dreadful start, the Mavericks outshot Texas 37 percent to 29 percent in the first half as the Longhorns made just 2 of 15 shots from beyond the arc.
Added to Texas’ trouble was its horrendous free-throw shooting; the Longhorns were only 5 of 11 from the line.
Overall, Texas-Arlington outshot Texas 46.6 percent to 39.3 percent. The Mavericks were 7 of 26 from long range, while the Longhorns were 3 of 23.
