UTA Women Lose To Western Kentucky

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington women’s basketball dropped its final home game of the 2013-14 season Saturday evening. Western Kentucky defeated the Mavericks 94-70 at College Park Center.

With the loss, UT Arlington falls to 4-23 overall and 3-13 in Sun Belt Conference action.

“Western Kentucky really raised its level of play since last time we saw them,” UT Arlington coach Krista Gerlich said. “They came out aggressive in the first four possessions and we stumbled and didn’t fight back early.”

Seniors Malaika Green, Briana Walker, Laila Suleiman and Desherra Nwanguma played their final game of their UTA careers at College Park Center. Nwanguma led the seniors with 19 points and eight rebounds.

Juniors Tahlia Pope and Chauntandra Williams stepped up for the Mavericks scoring a combined 30 points.

WKU opened the game with a 9-0 run, forcing Gerlich to call a timeout, but the

Mavericks recovered with a 3-pointer out of the timeout. The Lady Toppers continued to control the momentum in taking a 25-point lead (52-27) into the locker room.

The Mavericks shot 45.5 percent from the floor, but WKU was able to connect on 59.4 percent. UT Arlington improved its offense in the second half, shooting 55.6 percent from the floor. The Mavericks almost doubled their first half points with 43 in the second half.

UT Arlington travels to Alabama next week for its final road trip of the season. The Mavericks face Troy Wednesday at 7 p.m. before heading to Mobile to take on South Alabama Saturday at 5 p.m.
