Ware To Have Elbow Surgery

After a season in which he posted a career-low sack total, Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Ware is due to undergo right elbow surgery.

According to ESPN.com, Ware will have the operation on Feb. 18, but he doesn’t expect to miss much of his offseason training regimen. Ware told the website that the elbow was a problem throughout the past two years.

“It’s been killing me,” Ware said, according to ESPN.com. “It’s hurt really bad and that’s why I would wear an elbow pad to stop from getting it hit but that didn’t do much. It would get irritated even when it was barely touched.”

Last year, Ware underwent right shoulder surgery, and subsequently recorded just six sacks in 13 games. He averaged nearly 14 sacks in his previous eight seasons with the Cowboys, posting a career-high 20 in 2008.

In 2013, Ware also failed to force a fumble for the first time in his career. He was slowed by the elbow issue in addition to other nagging ailments.

“Rest helped it,” he said, according to ESPN.com. “I’m getting my work in. … My body feels great. Straight up, it feels really, really good. My quad, I can do all of that. I can do everything. Nothing is inhibiting me. If I had to go into the season now, I feel better than I did going into the season with the shoulder (surgery).
