Wozniacki becomes #1 ranked WTA player

BEIJING, CHINA – On Monday, October 11, 2010, Caroline Wozniacki became the 20th player in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) history to ascend to the top of the WTA Rankings. By reaching the quarterfinals at the 2010 China Open (Beijing), Wozniacki surpasses World No.1 Serena Williams, a ranking the American has held all season since becoming 2009 year-end World No.1 on November 2, 2009. Wozniacki will become the first Danish player (man or woman) to earn the World No.1 ranking and the 7th youngest in WTA history.
“I’m very proud of becoming No.1 in the world. It’s always been a dream for me to achieve the No.1 ranking and today is a great day for me,” said Wozniacki.
“It’s not surprising that Caroline’s incredible athleticism, discipline, dedication to training, and razor sharp focus have gotten her to World No.1,” said Stacey Allaster, Chairman and CEO of the WTA. “With the No.1 ranking, Caroline has joined a group of extraordinary players that have climbed to the pinnacle of the sport. She is an inspiring young woman who’s earned this incredible accolade.”
Wozniacki has won a tour-leading five titles so far this year, the first player to do so since 2007 when Justine Henin captured 10. Wozniacki’s 2010 accomplishments include titles at the Premier events – the Toray Pan Pacific Open (Tokyo) and the Rogers Cup (Montreal), as well as International tournaments – the MPS Group Championships (Ponte Vedra Beach), the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open, an inaugural WTA event in Wozniacki’s hometown of Copenhagen, and the Pilot Pen Tennis at Yale (New Haven). She has also reached the final of the BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells) and the semifinals of the Family Circle Cup (Charleston).
In addition to becoming the first singles player to qualify for the year-end WTA Championships–Doha 2010, Wozniacki is one of only two players (along with Venus Williams) to reach at least the fourth round of every Grand Slam this year, getting to the last 16 at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, the quarterfinals of Roland Garros and the semifinals of the US Open.
Wozniacki amassed a 13-match winning streak, the second longest on tour this season (Venus Williams, 15) in winning back-to-back titles at Montreal and New Haven and advancing to the US Open semifinals (l. to Clijsters). Her strong performance during the summer events resulted in capturing the coveted US Open Series title. Wozniacki has won a tourleading 56 matches this season and was seeded No.1 at a major for the first time at the US Open. Wozniacki is the winner of 11 career singles titles.
