LAWRENCE, Kan. (SMU) – Christine Elliott posted her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Mustangs, pulling within six points of becoming the 19th person in SMU history to score 1,000 points in a career.

The effort by the senior from Wichita, Kan., who was playing in her home state for the first time during her collegiate career, wasn’t enough as the Jayhawks improved to 7-0 with the 75-52 win over SMU (4-3).

The Mustangs found themselves trailing by six after the first 20 minutes, shooting 38.5-percent from the field, but Kansas scored 20 points in the paint in the first half for a 33-27 lead, shooting 48.3-percent.

The Jayhawks broke a 4-4 tie early in the half with a 9-2 run, but SMU scored the next six to cut the lead to three. The Mustangs cut it to one on a bucket by Destynee Hives-McCray, and got the ball back on a Kansas miss, but an offensive foul charged to Krystal Johnson took away SMU’s chance to take its first lead in the game.

SMU hit just one 3-pointer in the first half as Kansas stretched the lead back to six at the break. The Mustangs made just 6-of-12 free throws in the first half, but were out-rebounded by just one and turned 11 Kansas turnovers into 10 points to stay within striking distance.

Five minutes into the second half, the Jayhawks extended the lead to 11 and never let SMU back into the game. Kansas shot 65.5-percent from the field in the second half, connecting on 19-of-29 attempts, while holding SMU to just 10 second half field goals.

Elliott will go for her 1,000th point Saturday in her hometown when the Mustangs take on Wichita State in Wichita at 2 p.m.
