SMU Women Lose To Rice

HOUSTON (SMU) – Destynee Hives-McCray posted her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as Jessica Kuster scored 14 points in the second half to lead Rice to a 58-46 win over SMU in Tudor Fieldhouse Thursday night.
The Mustangs (21-8, 12-4 Conference USA) were held to just 22 points in the second half after leading 24-20 at halftime. SMU held Kuster to just one point in the first half, but the only player in C-USA went 4-for-5 in the second half to finish with 15 points and 18 rebounds.
Alisha Filmore hit two of her first three 3-pointers, but finished 3-of-7 from behind the arc as SMU made only four overall. The senior scored 13 points, reaching double digits for the 22nd time this season. Rice (14-15, 6-10 C-USA) shot 40 percent for the game, 20-of-50, and the Owls were 12-of-23 in the second half, 52.2 percent.
SMU was just 17-of-63 from the field, 27 percent, and the Mustangs were out-rebounded 49-36. SMU will be the No. 1 seed in the Conference USA Championship March 13-16 in Tulsa, Okla. The Mustangs will play the winner of the 8-9 game on Thursday, March 14. The game time is still yet to be determined.
