Federer is ousted in quarter-finals

Roger Federer has not missed a Grand Slam semi-final in 6 years – until today.  The World No. 1 player was upset by No. 5 Robin Soderling.

The French Open has been good to Soderling.  Last year he upset Rafael Nadal on his way to the final where he was runner-up to Federer.  It was Nadal’s first, and so far, only loss at the French Open.

Soderling lost the first set before a rain delay sent the players to the locker room with a 5-5 tie in the 2nd.  Soderling came out and broke Federer’s serve after being down 40-15.  From that point on, Soderling was the aggressor, firing precision shots all over the court.

Soderling will meet No. 15 Tomas Berdych in the semi-final round after Berdych defeated No. 11 Mikhail Youzhny.

There was a big upset on the women’s side also as No. 17 Francesca Schiavonne handily defeated No. 3 Caroline Wozniacki in two sets.

No. 5 Elena Dementieva got off to a slow start but rallied to be No. 19 Nadia Petrova.
