Mavs Rookie Breaks Ankle

The Dallas Mavericks were hit in the backcourt with some bad news on Friday.

Rookie point guard Shane Larkin suffered a broken ankle before he could even play in his first summer league game and a potential three-year, $9 million deal with free-agent guard Devin Harris was called off, according to ESPN, because of a toe injury that likely will sideline the former Mavericks player until the regular season begins.

ESPN also reported that the Mavericks may consider signing Harris once the injury heals.

Larkin, selected No. 18 overall by the Mavericks in the first round of the NBA Draft last month, fractured the ankle in a practice session and will miss two to three months, Yahoo! Sports reported.

The 5-foot-11 guard out of Miami was preparing for the Mavericks’ Summer League opener on Saturday against the Sacramento Kings in Las Vegas.

Larkin was among a group of guards brought in by the Mavericks during the offseason. The team signed Jose Calderon, was close to reaching a deal with free-agent Monta Ellis and has rookies Gal Mekel and Ricky Ledo on the roster.
