McCoy Receives Armed Forces Merit Award

From drug house occupant to hero, University of North Texas defensive end, Brandon McCoy has proven that anything is possible. On Friday, McCoy officially received the second annual Armed Forces Merit Award at the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth. McCoy’s journey to receiving the Armed Forces Merit Award presented by the Football Writers of America (FWAA) was not an easy one as he faced numerous of challenges growing up. McCoy was kicked out of high school his senior year for cheating, forcing him to earn his diploma in summer school. Also, he was kicked out of his house for using drugs. McCoy then went on to live in a drug house for a year before seeking a career in the Army. McCoy said the Army turned his life around as he went on to serve five years (2004-2008). He received numerous of awards for his time spent in Iraq, showing he had indeed become a true hero. McCoy went on to start his first year of college football with UNT in 2010 at age 25. From then on, McCoy began to flourish. McCoy went from being an avid drug user, to a hero of our nation. He has had his fair share of tribulations, but his amazing triumphs and victories ultimately resulted in him winning the Armed Forces Merit Award. McCoy will be playing in his last college football game in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on New Year’s Day at the Cotton Bowl Stadium.
