Quarterfinals Set At 2012 US Open Sectional Qualifier

ARLINGTON, Texas – The third day of action at the 2012 Texas US Open Sectional Qualifying Tournament, in Arlington was filled with men’s and women’s singles battles but it was the tandems in mixed doubles that was the center of attention for the day.
Familiar Texas tennis family names littered the bracket such as Michael and Camila Wesbrooks of McKinney; Miguel and Rosalia Alda of Round Rock; Peter and Arianne Goddard of Dallas and the defending champions Harrison and Samantha Adams from New Braunfels.
The team of Peggy Porter of Dallas and Josh Hagar of Austin eliminated Michael and Camila Wetbrooks, 7-6(4), 6-3 in one of the best matches of the day that drew the attention of the crowd that surrounded center court No. 6 at the Arlington Tennis Center. Porter/Hagar will face Nicholas Melott and Claire Williams of San Angelo. Melott/Williams earlier defeated Sasha Ermakov and Irina Lykina.
Miguel and Rosalia Alda downed the team of Joseph Gray from Dallas and Rylie Cox of Rockwall 6-1, 6-4 to advance and face the team that entered from Anchorage, Alaska of Paul Hemry and Whitney Williams. Hemry/Williams advanced to the quarterfinals with victories over Peter and Arianne Goddard 6-0, 6-4 then defeated Max Montague and
Kelsey Grambeau of Dallas 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10).
“We picked Texas because of the weather, competition, family and relatives that leave nearby and a chance to go and play in the US Open,” said Hemry about why they picked the Texas US Open qualifier that is the nearly 4,000-miles from Anchorage to Arlington.
Williams, who said her family moved to Anchorage a couple of years ago from Louisiana, wanted to play tennis in the changing outdoor weather conditions of Texas. This includes the heat and wind because she said they play indoors the majority of the time in Anchorage.
Defending mixed champions Harrison and Samantha Adams defeated Brad Henkelman and Erika Richarme of Montgomery 6-0, 6-0. The Adams’ will face John Mee of Dallas and Karina Traxler of Rockwall. Mee/Traxler advanced by defeating Felipe Wescoup and Samantha Powell 6-2, 7-6 (2).
The team of Parker Wynn, from North Ridgeland Hills and Riley Reeves, of Saginaw, defeated Gene Park and Erin Cohn 6-2, 6-1 then beat Jordan Hart and Lexis Thoma 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-8. Wynn / Reeves will face the team of Ryan Brown of Spicewood and Sam Laudon of Austin. Brown / Laudon defeated Andrew Adams and Hanna Peterson 6-4, 6-7(6), 1-0 (2).
The mixed doubles Quarterfinals will continue on Thursday, June 21, following the women’s singles play (not before noon). All the action is taking place at the Arlington Tennis Center.
