SMU W-Golf Wraps Up Lady Puerto Rico Classic With 12th Place Finish

RIO GRANDE, P.R. (SMU) — The SMU women’s golf team finished in 12th place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic held at the Rio Mar Beach Resort. Freshman Amy Ruengmateekhun led the Mustangs with a three over (225) during the competition and placed 16th overall.

The Mustangs carded a 928 during the 54-hole event and wrapped up the tournament with a 305 during today’s final round. Fellow SMU freshman Maria Elena Villamil joined Ruengmateekhun in the top-20 by finishing with a four over (227) for the three-day event. As a squad the Ponies had the top finish of the tournament’s unranked teams.

The reigning Lady Puerto Rico champion and top-ranked Alabama won the event by five shots over runner-up Iowa State. The Crimson Tide were led by Stephanie Meadow, who shot a 212 overall and narrowly edged Florida State’s Maria Salinas by one stroke, to be the event’s individual champion.

The tournament was played on the par-72, 6,300-yard River Course with 18 holes played each day.
