SMU Wins At UCF

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Markus Kennedy was 10 of 12 from the field with a career-high 22 points on Wednesday night as [RV/RV] SMU won its seventh straight, 63-52 over South Florida.

Yanick Moreira added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Kennedy grabbed seven boards. SMU (17-4, 8-1 American) took a 52-40 lead on Moreira’s dunk, capping an 8-0 run with 7:52 left. South Florida (7-14, 1-7) got no closer than seven points from there. The win was SMU’s fourth straight road conference win, marking the first time since the 1983-84 season SMU has reached that mark of conference road success.

SMU’s leading scorer, Nic Moore (15.2 points per game), struggled from the field with 2-of-11 shooting for seven points, but had six assists.

Corey Allen Jr. and Nehemias Morillo scored 18 apiece for South Florida. Allen was 4 for 7 from 3-point range and Morillo was 3 for 5.

USF opened the game with a 9-2 burst, but SMU responded with an 11-3 run to take its first lead and closed the half up 32-25.

SMU is back in action Saturday, Jan. 31 when the Mustangs welcome UCF to Moody Coliseum in Dallas. Tip-off for Saturday’s contest is 7:00 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on ESPNU. The 1972 SWC championship team will be honored at the game, being promoted as Throwback Night. The Mustangs will wear throwback uniforms and the first 500 fans will receive a pack of throwback SMU basketball trading cards. Fans are encouraged to wear their best 70’s attire to the game.
