DALLAS (SMU) – A thrilling day of tennis resulted in a few big victories for the SMU Mustangs, but the home squad ultimately fell to No. 23 Texas, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Dallas Country Club.

SMU took the doubles point with two victories. Arturs Kazijevs and Mischa Nowicki defeated No. 13 Chris Camillone and David Holiner in convincing fashion, 8-3. Gaston Cuadranti and Alex Sanders took down No. 41 Alex Hilliard and Andrew Horinek, 8-4.

“We played great,” Head Coach Carl Neufeld said. “Our doubles were really exciting. Beating two nationally-ranked opponents is a rare accomplishment. It’s exciting to see the progress.”

The singles portion of the day featured a pair of energizing matches at the top, including Kazijevs (the No. 83 singles player in the nation) defeating Sudanwa Sitaramm 6-2; 7-5. Cuadranti nearly defeated No. 43 Daniel Whitehead, taking the match to three sets, but ultimately fell 4-6; 7-5; 6-7.

“The top two matches were very exciting,” Neufeld said. “Kazijevs and Cuadranti are emerging as top national players.

“This is a great first step in what should be an exciting spring season.”

SMU will play their next match this coming Saturday in Frisco at the Lakes Tennis Academy against No. 26 Texas A&M at 11 a.m.
