LAFAYETTE, La. (9/21/12) – Senior midfielder Carly McDowell scored two goals in North Texas soccer’s 2-0 win over the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns on Friday, September 21.

“Taking Carly out of the middle [of the field] and moving her to the outside midfield position seemed to really pay off,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “It gave our offense the spark we needed to beat a very feisty ULL team.”

McDowell opened the scoring on a pass from junior defender Alli Guderian in the 17th minute, which turned out to be the only goal of the first half. In fact, North Texas outshot Louisiana-Lafayette 6-0 in the initial 45 minutes.

Just 1:01 into the second half, McDowell deposited her second goal of the game and third of the season past Cajuns goalkeeper Amanda Moorefield to put the Mean Green up 2-0. Freshman Karla Pineda was credited with her third assist of the season.

The multi-goal game for McDowell is her first since Aug. 28, 2011, when

she had two goals in an 11-0 win over Grambling.

“It always feels good to be the one to put the goals away but it was a team effort,” said McDowell. “It’s a new season now and we’re happy to end that streak for our first conference win. We’re hoping to get another win on Sunday [against ULM].”

North Texas goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine picked up her fourth full shutout and sixth win of the season after making two saves to give the Mean Green a win in its first Sun Belt Conference game of 2012. Kerestine also helped keep the Cajuns from scoring on the Mean Green for the fourth straight season. The last goal Louisiana-Lafayette scored against North Texas was in a 3-1 loss to the Mean Green on Sept. 26, 2008.

North Texas (6-3-1, 1-0-0 Sun Belt) also snaps a four-game winless streak, which was the longest since suffering a five-game losing streak in 2007.
