Women’s Semis at 2010 French Open

It was women’s day at Roland Garros as the women’s singles semi-finals were conducted.

In the first match, No. 5 Elena Dementieva looked to make her return to the French Open final for the first time since 2004.  Unfortunately for her, she tore a muscle in her left calf back in the 2nd round and it finally caught up to her.  Trying to fight through the pain, Dementieva was unable to play her powerful baseline game and lost the first set in a tiebreak.  Dementieva retired after the first set, sending Francesca Schiavone (17) to her first Grand Slam Final.

The other match pitted No. 4 Jelena Jankovic against the surprising No. 7 Samantha Stosur.  Stosur had already dispatched two of the favorites to win the event, Justine Henin and Serena Williams.  Jankovic quickly became the third former No. 1 ranked player to fall to Stosur.  Stosur played a nearly flawless match to win with ease.

Neither player has ever won, or even played for, a Grand Slam title.  That will change on Saturday.
