he game-winner in overtime, gave the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory over the visiting Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night at American Airlines Center.

Dallas controlled much of the play on the shot clock but needed a late push to earn the two points. The Stars failed to score in the first period despite outshooting Winnipeg 12-6, then opened the scoring 1:17 into the second. On a delayed penalty with an extra skater on, Rantanen and Robertson worked the puck to Wyatt Johnston for a snap shot from the near wing. It was Johnston’s first goal of the season, after he scored 45 last season.

Winnipeg answered with two goals in quick succession. With 9:10 left in the second, moments after Jake Oettinger stopped a Brayden Yager breakaway, Gabriel Vilardi poked the puck in through net-front traffic. The Jets took the lead 1:48 later when, after Dallas failed to clear its zone, Neal Pionk set up Kyle Connor for a one-timer from the right circle. It was Vilardi’s first goal of the season and Connor’s team-leading ninth.

That lead held into the final minutes. With Dallas trailing 2-1 and its goaltender pulled, Mikko Rantanen set up behind the Winnipeg net and fed Hintz in the slot to beat Stuart Skinner and force overtime with two minutes remaining in regulation.

In the three-on-three period, Pionk had a shot blocked, and the puck went the other way for a Hintz breakaway that he slid past Skinner with 1:13 left. Hintz beat Skinner between the legs after taking a breakaway pass from Miro Heiskanen.

By the numbers

Jason Robertson and Rantanen each had two assists, and Oettinger stopped 17 shots for the win. Skinner made 35 saves as Winnipeg was outshot 38-19. Dallas also won 40 of 65 faceoffs (61.5%). Neither team scored on the power play: the Stars went 0-for-2 and the Jets 0-for-4.

Robertson’s two assists carried a milestone. They were his 500th and 501st career points, reached in his 466th game; only Neal Broten, Bobby Smith and Dino Ciccarelli got to 500 points faster in franchise history.

One scary moment came late in regulation. Jets forward Nino Niederreiter left the ice bleeding with 6:51 remaining after being hit in the face by the stick of teammate Tyrel Bauer. No update on his condition was available in initial reports.

Context

The win was the fourth straight for Dallas, which came in off a similar finish two nights earlier, when Rantanen scored a hat trick accounting for all of the Stars’ goals in a 3-2 overtime win against Boston. For Winnipeg, the loss dropped the Jets to 0-2-2 over their past four games, all of them one-goal results.
