DALLAS — Oct. 2, 2026
The St. Louis Blues opened the 2026-27 NHL season with a 4-0 shutout of the Dallas Stars on Friday night, holding their Central Division rival scoreless on 25 shots.
Mason McTavish scored the game-winning goal in his St. Louis debut, putting the Blues ahead at even strength in the first period. St. Louis added a second-period goal to lead 2-0, then sealed the win with two empty-net goals in the third, one from Pius Suter and one from Jimmy Snuggerud. Suter and Snuggerud each finished with a goal and an assist. Connor McMichael and Colton Parayko also had assists.
By the numbers, Dallas controlled much of the game. The Stars won 62.1% of faceoffs (36 of 58), outhit the Blues 21-18, and had 59 shot attempts to St. Louis’s roughly 50. Shots on goal were close, 25-24 for Dallas. But the Stars missed the net 18 times, and the Blues blocked 20 of their attempts. Two of St. Louis’s 24 shots went into an empty net, so the Dallas goaltending faced 22 shots and allowed two goals.
Neither power play scored. Both teams went 0-for-4. Tyler Seguin and Wyatt Johnston each had four shots for Dallas. Leading scorers Mikko Rantanen and Roope Hintz were held to one shot on goal between them, and each finished minus-2. The game also included a fight, with each team assessed a fighting major. St. Louis defenseman Brandon Carlo received a major and a game misconduct.
The game opened a schedule that has grown longer. The NHL is playing 84 games per team instead of 82 for the first time in 2026-27, which adds two more division games.
