Buechele Added To Manning Watch List

NEW ORLEANS (SMU) – SMU’s Shane Buechele was named to the Manning Award Watch List Thursday, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced. The award honors college football quarterbacks and is the only award that takes the candidates’ bowl performances into consideration in its balloting.

Buechele returns for his second season on the Hilltop as SMU’s all-time leader in single-season passing yards (3,929) and passing touchdowns (34). He also set the program record for single-game passing touchdowns with six against Temple. Buechele registered 4,034 yards of total offense last season, which ranks second for a Mustang.

Along with Buechele’s touchdown total, he also led the American Athletic Conference in passing yards per game at 302.2 and points responsible for at 222.

Buechele posted three games of 400+ yards and set the SMU record for consecutive games with 2+ touchdown passes with 11.

Heading into the season, Buechele ranks in the top 10 on active career FBS lists for completions (2nd, 710), passing yards (2nd, 8,565), total offense (2nd, 8,928), TD passes (3rd, 64), passing yards per game (5th, 237.9), total TDs responsible for (5th, 70) and completions per game (6th, 19.72).

Of the 30 quarterbacks named to the Watch List, only two registered more yards in 2019 and three threw for more touchdowns.

Buechele has been named to the Maxwell and Davey O’Brien Award Watch Lists, as well as the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List. He was also selected as CBS Sports’ No. 1 player in the conference heading into the 2020 season, and the top quarterback in the state of Texas by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

Athlon Sports, Dave Campbell’s, College Football News and Phil Steele’s Magazine have named him a preseason first-team all-conference selection.

Buechele was a member of the Watch List in 2019 and was twice named to a Manning Award Star of the Week (Nov. 11 & Sept. 30).

Ten finalists will be selected prior to the postseason and the winner will be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship. In addition to the Manning Award’s yearly honor, each week during the regular season, eight quarterbacks are recognized as Manning Quarterbacks of the Week.
