Elliott Records Double-Double To Lead SMU To 66-58 Win Over Tulsa

DALLAS (SMU) – Christine Elliott posted her second double-double of the season to lead the Mustangs to a 66-58 victory over Tulsa Sunday in Moody Coliseum as SMU (13-11, 6-5 Conference USA) completed the season sweep of the Golden Hurricane (5-14, 1-10 C-USA).

Elliott went 6-of-10 from the field for 15 points and 13 rebounds for her 12th-career double-double, but it was Haley Day who let the Mustangs in scoring. The senior was 6-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, for a team-high 16 points. She also pulled down eight rebounds.

SMU opened the game on a 15-2 run, holding Tulsa scoreless for the first 8:01 of the game. The Mustangs maintained the defensive intensity throughout the first half, allowing just 12 points to take a 26-12 lead into the locker room. The 12 points was a season-low for Tulsa and an SMU opponent.

Tulsa shot just 12.9-percent in the first half, but connected on 52.8-percent from the floor in the second half to cut into the lead, making 19-of-36 shots. However, the Mustangs sank 54.5-percent of their second half shots to keep the game out of reach. Once it was established with 10:39 left in the first half, SMU maintained the double digit lead until just 13 seconds remained in the game.

The Mustangs shot 44.2-percent for the game, 23-of-52, while Tulsa was 23-of-67, 34.3-percent. Delisha Wills finished with 15 points, and Samantha Mahnesmith added 11 to give SMU four players in double figures. Taleya Mayberry led all scorers with 24 points for Tulsa.

SMU will travel to East Carolina Thursday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m., before returning home to take on UAB on Sunday, Feb. 20. SMU will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day with a Fan Fest featuring Olympic Gold Medalist Nastia Liukin, presented by PureSport. The Mustangs will also participate in the WBCA’s PinkZone, raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research.
