Kellyn Acosta scored the tiebreaking goal in the 69th minute and FC Dallas kept alive one streak and ended another with a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday afternoon at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
Acosta scored on a shot from the top of the box after he eluded Los Angeles defender Daniel Steres. He finished the play by sending the ball into the bottom of the net.
It was the 21-year-old’s sixth career goal and helped FC Dallas win its sixth straight regular-season opener, which is an MLS record. The goal also ended a 0-7-2 winless skid for FC Dallas in the regular season at Los Angeles since a 6-3 win on Sept. 12, 2009.
Acosta’s tally also helped FC Dallas improve to 6-24-5 against the Galaxy on the road.
Maximiliano Urruti also scored for FC Dallas, which claimed last season’s Supporters Shield for having the best regular-season record when it played to a 0-0 tie in Los Angeles in the 2016 regular-season finale.
Giovani dos Santos scored on a penalty kick for the Galaxy, whose roster included seven players appearing in their first MLS game.
Dallas had most of the quality scoring chances during a scoreless first half but struck quickly in the second half. Following a turnover by Los Angeles, Urruti eluded Galaxy defender Jelly Van Damme and scored in the 47th minute.
The Galaxy tied the game in the 53th minute after Dave Romney was taken down by FC Dallas defender Hernan Grana. Dos Santos took the penalty kick and sent the shot into the upper right of the net.
Dos Santos nearly scored in the 62nd minute but Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz stop his high shot and deflected the ball out of bounds. In the 64th minute, a header by Galaxy midfielder Jermaine Jones deflected off the crossbar.
In the third minute of extra time, Los Angeles had the potential tying goal by Ariel Lassiter miss the net.
Los Angeles had 12 shots but only two were on goal. Dallas recorded 10 shots but also put two on goal.
