Gorney Named AAC Rookie of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) – SMU freshman Kelsey Gorney was given American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday. Gorney scored the game-winning goal in SMU’s 1-0 win at Temple on Sunday, and also tallied an assist on Thursday at Connecticut.

Gorney becomes the second SMU player to receive league recognition this season. Shelby Redman was named to the league’s honor roll on Aug. 26.

Gorney is second on the team in goals (five) and points (11), ranking ninth and 12th in the American. Gorney also has three game-winners, which ranks fourth in the league.

SMU’s freshmen have been a productive bunch this season, accounting for 43 percent of the team’s scoring with 10 goals and eight assists for 28 points.

The Mustangs (6-4-0, 1-1-0) will host Louisville on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Cincinnati on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are available at SMUTickets.com.
