Hicks Named AAC Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – Following a 45-31 victory over No. 17 Houston, Ben Hicks and Kyran Mitchell earned American Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively, league officials announced Monday.

This marks the first AAC Player of the Week honors for both this season, with each having previously picked up an Honor Roll nod (Hicks Oct. 22, Mitchell Oct. 29).

Hicks led the Mustangs with 318 yards and four touchdowns, including a 59-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Roberson, Jr. Saturday marked the 10th-career 300+ yard game for Hicks, the most all-time for a Mustang, and his second this season. His four TDs also tied his single-game career high.

The junior has thrown for 1,643 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2018. Hicks also holds SMU career records in passing touchdowns (67), touchdowns responsible for (70), passing yards (8,142) and total offense (8,036).

Mitchell finished Saturday’s outing with game-highs in tackles for loss (3.0), sacks (2.0) and fumble recoveries (2), and added seven tackles.

The senior leads the Mustangs in tackles (61) and TFLs (11.5) and shares the team lead with Richard Moore in sacks (4.0). Mitchell has 241 tackles (170 solo) in his career, with 37.5 TFLs and 12.0 sacks and has five fumble recoveries.

In the win over Houston, the Mustangs posted season highs against an FBS opponent in scoring (45), total offense (514), rushing yards (196) and first downs (25). SMU also held the Cougars to a season-low 31 points and 365 yards.

SMU heads to East Hartford, Connecticut, Saturday for a match-up with East Division foe UConn. The Mustangs are 4-0 all-time against the Huskies, including a 49-28 victory in Dallas last season. Kick is set for 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT.
