DALLAS (SMU) – Senior linebacker Randall Joyner has been named a semifinalist for the 2013 National Football Federation William V. Campbell Trophy, the NFF announced on Wednesday. The 170 players, including 54 FBS athletes, are also candidates for the 2013 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award, presented by Fidelity Investments. The Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best scholar-athlete in the nation.

Finalists for the Campbell Trophy will be announced on October 31 by the NFF Awards Committee. The Campbell Trophy is named in honor of former Columbia University player and head coach Bill Campbell, who earned the NFF’s prestigious Gold Medal in 2004.

Joyner is averaging six tackles a game, including 4.5 solo tackles per game. The Carrollton, Texas, native also forced a fumble last week at TCU.

The 170 semifinalists represent the most since 2006, when the NFF increased the nomination standards to a 3.2 grade point average.
