Larry Brown Era at SMU Begins With Victory

The SMU Mustangs opened the Larry Brown coaching era with a win at Moody Coliseum over Loyala Marymount 73-58 Sunday night.  The Mustangs have won 14 of the last 17 home openers and are 41-16 when opening the season at home.

All five starters for the Mustangs scored in double figures.  Guard Nick Russell led the Mustangs with 19 points.  Ryan Manuel scored a career-high 14 points and added 4 assists.

Shawn Williams scored 12, Jalen Jones added 11 points, and Cannen Cunningham notched 10 for the Mustangs.

London Giles scored 7 points off the bench for SMU.  

The Mustangs were 4 of 9 from 3-point range, with Williams hitting 3 of the 4. 

SMU out-rebounded Loyola 38-31.

Loyola Marymount was led by Anthony Ireland with 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

This is Brown’s first time at the college level since winning the national championship with

Kansas in 1988.  Brown has also won an NBA title with Detroit in 2004.  He is the only coach to win both an NBA and NCAA title.

SMU travels to rival TCU on Thursday.  Tip-off is set for 7:00pm.
