Mahnesmith Leads Mustangs To 69-65 Comeback Win Over UTSA

DALLAS (SMU) – Samantha Mahnesmith scored 15 of her season-high 17 points in the second half to lead the SMU women’s basketball team to a 69-65 come-from-behind win over the UTSA in Moody Coliseum Wednesday night.

Mahnesmith hit a jumper with 4:09 left in the game to give the Mustangs their first lead since the 13:17 mark in the first half. SMU out-scored the Roadrunners 12-9 over the final four minutes of the game, going 8-for-12 from the free throw line in the last 2:20, to take the victory and improve to 6-2 at home, 7-5 overall, while the Roadrunners fell to 4-8.

Alisha Filmore went 9-of-12 from the free throw line to finish with 16 points, and Christine Elliott scored 11 points, connecting on 7-of-8 attempts at the free throw line, with eight rebounds. The Mustangs made 31 free throws, one away from the second most in a game all-time at SMU.

SMU out-rebounded the Roadrunners 43-39, but grabbed 19 on the offensive end for 21 second chance points. Filmore also had five of the Mustangs’ 11 assists, recording at least five in three of the last four games. Akil Simpson added seven points and seven rebounds, while Kristin Hernandez scored eight points.

The Mustangs close out 2011 against Stephen F. Austin on Friday in Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m., before opening the Conference USA season at home against UTEP on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m.
